“Abigail’s Bling for Balding Beauties” was started in honor of my 3 year-old niece, Abigail… the one being held high in this picture by her daddy. Abigail was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on Monday, July 11, 2011 after an almost 2 week hospital stay.

It all started with what they thought was a swollen lymph node, then turned to 104 degree fever for 8 days, with a diagnosis of Salmonella in her blood. Her blood levels never returned back to normal after treating her initial diagnosis of Salmonella, which concerned the doctors. Eventually, they found out through bone marrow biopsies, bone scans, CT scans, lots of poke-y things, etc., that her small little body had rapidly growing Blast Cells, leading them to the sad and scary diagnosis of ALL.
Abigail started chemo the day after her diagnosis… a combination of 3 different chemotherapies were placed in her spinal tap. She is on a rigorous treatment for the first 6 weeks, with chemotherapy treatment lasting for the next two years.

The doctors told Abigail’s family to expect that she’ll experience many side effects. One of the sad and most evident to others, is hair loss… and this is where this group comes in…

Abigail is so cute with her firecracker personality, blonde hair, and pixie cut (which her mom had to get done because Abigail decided to cut her own hair with a scissors… typical little girl stuff).

As her tante (aunt) and an ex-Children’s Oncology Nurse, I needed to do something to keep my mind and my hands busy… plus I was up in the middle of the night praying and feeding my newborn son, thinking of what I could do to help…

…and “Abigail’s Bling for Balding Beauties” was born.

We plan to gather headbands, caps, beanies, etc. to donate in Abigail’s honor to other children experiencing the same thing Abigail is experiencing. We pray that each of these headbands, etc., brightens the day of the children that receive them and that they help them feel more comfortable in their own skin. And we pray that they and their families see Jesus in the handiwork of those who are donating these items…  and ultimately, that they find Jesus if they don’t already know Him.

Please pray for healing for Abigail, for Abigail’s parents and siblings as they adjust to their new “normal”, for the doctors and nurses treating Abigail, and for others to be blessed by Abigail and her family’s testimony…

Psalm 46:1

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”  The BIBLE

Keep praying… and keep crafting.

Thank you Jenny… we are so thankful for all the prayers for Abigail. She is such a special little girl. I don’t know who you are, but let us know if there is anything we can pray for you and your family.

I just want to tell you how much your charity moved us the other day when to our surprise we received a big box from FedEx which contained so many beautiful hats and head bands for children diagnosed with cancer. I still don’t know how you received our name but we were so blessed with your gift. We have hung up Benny’s hats on his wall so they will be ready to choose from when he does lose his hair and plan to take others to the cancer clinic and hospital. We will pray for your Abigail and know that Benny has a “sister” in his journey. We are happy to say he just finished his first phase of induction and his marrow is currently in remission. We know there will be a long road ahead of us but appreciate there are others out there sending us hope.

Hi Jennie… I’m so glad you already got it!!! I thought it might take a while with all the Christmas package busy-ness. I got your name from Fransisca Vander Muelen… she’s been a friend of our family’s forever. I’ll be praying for you and your family and especially Ben… this is a hard road… but God always has a plan, and He has a special one for little Benny now. Glad to hear he’s done with his induction and I’ll keep praying that the remission continues. Merry Christmas tomorrow… sounds like you’ve got a reason to celebrate!!!
With hope and praying for strength for your family,
      “Tante” Katrina

      Hi Jennie,

It’s me Shari, I gave your name and address to a friend of mine from church – Francisca Vander Meulen – she apparently had contacts with this website. Anyway she heard about your little guys condition and wanted to help. I have been thinking and praying for your whole family. I am so thankful that things are going well so far. Just wanted to let you know that it was me who gave out your name.

      Take care & God Bless,

Hi Shari… Thank you for visiting the site AND for giving Francisca the Colgan’s name and address. It is so fun to be able to send them a fun box of “Bling” during such a sad, crazy, uncertain time… hopefully bringing a smile and some comfort to a few Mom’s and Dad’s and kiddos out there. And now we can pray for little Ben together.
        Thank you so much again.
        In His Hands,
        ‘Tante’ Katrina

Hi Miss Bassy Sassafrass! I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciated your cards. Our office has moved twice since we last spoke, so it really was a miracle that the letters found us. I’m glad to read here that you have a baby boy and I’m praying no news is good news when it comes to no recent posts here about your niece. I’m also very glad you wrote because I couldn’t for the life of me remember your nickname and no one remembered who I was talking about when I said Katrina. You were one of my favorites, though. :) I miss my Hudson so much every day, so it’s nice to still get cards and have people from all over the U.S. tell us they named their boys Hudson in honor of our Hudson Quinn. I’m so greatful that he is remembered for being as special as he definitely was. There is something about him, that’s for sure. Hudson’s angel day was June 23, since you said you weren’t sure of the day. Our Chase is 5 now and has beautiful honey blond hair past her waist, so she appreciated the hair clips and headband you sent. Thank you. I read the cards you sent to us and she cried with Alvin and the boys and me. She still talks about Hudson almost every day and you would think that she was much older when he left us since she remembers so much. Please email me and I’ll give you my phone number. I’d love to talk with you. I hope you and your neice and the family are doing as well as you possibly can. Thanks again! Tiphanie p.s.Sorryabout contacting you here, but it’s all I had! :)

TIPHANIE!!! I knew the cards would get to you somehow!!! I cannot believe that Chase is already 5… has it really been that long? Seems like yesterday. I bet she is just so beautiful. Glad she got those little bows. My house is full of them and I only have two boys… no girls to try them on and model… but my son thinks it’s normal to wear them :) Poor kid.
And the rest of your family, too… you family was just one solid rock… something I held fast to while taking care of your Hudson. He had something special about him. I always pray for your family around June/July because I knew it was around then that it happened… but now I have a specific day to pray on… and I will.
I’ll email you seperately… And Abigail’s updates are up on the right side, in the archives. She is doing VERY well… we feel so blessed.
      Talk to you soon,
      Katrina a.k.a Bassy :)
